PixelSqueeze feature guide

Every control in the Export tab, what it does, and the rules the plugin follows when it writes files.

Formats

  • Name
    JPEG (quality)
    Type
    photos
    Description

Lossy, no transparency; transparent areas become white. Quality 1 to 100. Around 75 to 85 is visually identical to the source for photographs at a fraction of the size.

  • Name
    WebP (quality)
    Type
    web
    Description

Lossy with transparency kept. Same quality scale as JPEG, usually 25 to 35 percent smaller at the same look. Supported by every current browser.

  • Name
    PNG-8 (quantized)
    Type
    flat UI, icons, screenshots
    Description

Reduces the image to at most 256 colors with a median-cut palette and optional Floyd-Steinberg dithering. Flat design work shrinks dramatically with no visible change; photographs band, use JPEG or WebP for those. If the result would be larger than the original PNG, the original bytes are kept and the row shows 0 percent.

  • Name
    PNG (original)
    Type
    lossless
    Description

Figma's own PNG, untouched. Use it when you need lossless output with alpha.

Scale and size

Scales run from 0.25x to 4x. Custom factor accepts any number, and Target width exports every layer at exactly that pixel width, which is what you want for hero images and banners that must match a CSS size.

A layer that would exceed 16,384 pixels on a side cannot be rendered by Figma. The plugin checks this before exporting anything and names the layer and its would-be size so you can reduce the scale.

Batches and the ZIP

  • One file downloads under its layer name; several files are zipped as pixelsqueeze-export.zip.
  • Layer names are made safe for file systems. Two layers with the same name get numeric suffixes so nothing is overwritten inside the ZIP.
  • The savings report lists every file's original and new size. The status line gives the total and the overall percentage saved.
  • Free exports handle up to 10 layers per batch; Pro removes the limit.

Settings memory

Format, scale, quality, colors, dithering and naming choices are saved on your machine via Figma's plugin storage and restored the next time you open the plugin. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Naming rules (Pro)

  • Name
    Scale suffix
    Type
    @2x
    Description

Appends @2x, @0.5x and so on to each file name, or _1200w for target-width exports. Off by default.

  • Name
    Separator
    Type
    underscore or hyphen
    Description

The character that replaces spaces and unsafe characters in layer names.

  • Name
    Lowercase
    Type
    toggle
    Description

Lowercases file names, which many CDNs and static hosts expect.

  • Name
    JPEG extension
    Type
    .jpg or .jpeg
    Description

Some build pipelines accept only one of the two.

Folders from layer names (Pro)

A layer named icons/home becomes icons/home.png inside the ZIP, so a well-named Figma page unpacks straight into your project's asset folders. Without Pro the slash is replaced by the separator.

Target file size (Pro)

Enter a maximum in KB and the plugin searches for the highest JPEG or WebP quality that fits, trying at most eight encodes per file. The row shows the quality it settled on, or "over N KB" when even quality 1 does not fit, in which case reduce the scale.

Presets (Pro)

Save any combination of settings under a name, for example "Blog hero 1600w WebP" or "App Store 3x PNG", and load it from the dropdown. Up to 50 presets are stored on your machine.
